Meet
Leslie van Zyl-Smit
Mechanical engineer, project manager, coach and mentor, business systems strategist, avid paddler, husband and father.
Leslie has 25 years’ experience as a Professional Mechanical Engineer (ECSA reg. no. 20110526) and Project Manager (PMP reg. no. 1766183) and holds an MSc in Engineering from Stellenbosch University.
His career began in the petrochemical industry, where he created detailed mechanical engineering design solutions for SASOL. This included ASME code design of pressure vessels, storage tanks, thermal design of heat exchangers, as well as the sizing and specification of mechanical equipment including fans, pumps, valves and piping equipment. By the time he left this sector, Leslie was recognised as a competent pressure vessel and air-cooled heat exchanger design engineer in the petrochemical industry.
Towards the end of 2004, He joined forces with a former engineering mentor to establish a property development company. During this phase of his career, Leslie provided project management services across a wide range of privately-funded built environment capital projects. Projects executed included cluster residential developments, high-density apartments as well as refurbishment and Greenfields projects creating value in the commercial property sector.
In 2009 Leslie joined the AGES group of companies, to head their engineering business unit, AGES Engineering Services. His responsibilities included projects providing groundwater supply solutions to the mining industry and rural communities in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces. In 2010, Leslie re-located to East London to focus on mechanical engineering requirements in the Eastern Cape.
In 2016, Leslie was appointed as Lead Mechanical Engineer on behalf of the Sakhiwo FM Consortium team, where he was responsible for engineering and project management services rendered to the Eastern Cape Department of Health’s Scheduled Maintenance Management Programme. These services focussed on the functional conditional assessment of critical electro-mechanical equipment, including HVAC systems, boilers, hot water systems, water supply and treatment infrastructure, WWT, industrial kitchen and laundry equipment, at various health facilities throughout the Eastern Cape Province. His involvement spanned the planning and execution stages of projects, focusing on the maintenance and design of mechanical systems serving the health industry. This provided Leslie with the opportunity to focus on mechanical engineering solutions including HVAC, passive and active fire protection as well as wet services within the built environment sector.
In 2020, Leslie started trading as Kidron to provide bespoke project management and mechanical engineering services to a wide range of clients as a registered professional mechanical engineer and competent person as per the Building Regulations of South Africa.
